The social component to the switch from active to passive was probably mainly about fees and only secondarily about performance. Many 401k's started getting lawsuits over not choosing the lowest fee funds, and in general were put in a situation of having to defend the process by which they chose active funds. Pension fund managers also get questioned about it (particularly with respect to hedge funds). Now plan managers (and pension fund managers) have a view that "nobody gets fired for buying index", and it becomes a harder pitch for active managers.

According to your idiotic logic, a journal that published 10 articles, and one of them discovered a cure for cancer (1/10), is same good as a journal that published 1000 articles and discovered 100 cures for cancer (1/10 again).
Do you see how idiotic you are now? This is not the Olympics, we are not trying to put journals in "the same conditions" so that they can "fairly" compete.
This is research, we are trying to discover cures for cancer.
Brilliant, then SSRN is better than all the peer-reviewed journals. All my papers are A's!
